Piece count is the total number of elements in a LEGO set, printed on the box. It is a rough guide to build time and finished model size. Higher piece counts generally mean larger builds. A 500-piece set typically takes 2 to 4 hours. A 5,000-piece set may take 10 to 20 hours across multiple sessions.

Not necessarily. A 200-piece set designed for children can deliver more play value for its audience than a 2,000-piece adult set. When choosing a gift, consider the recipient's age, experience level and the subject matter first, and use piece count as a secondary factor.

A retired LEGO set is one that LEGO has taken out of production. Once retired, it is no longer restocked by authorised retailers. Retired sets can only be found on the secondary market. Modular buildings and large licensed sets (Star Wars, Harry Potter) are among the most sought after once retired.

LEGO does not typically publish advance retirement notices. However, sets showing low stock at multiple retailers, sets that have been in production for three or more years and sets no longer listed on the LEGO website are commonly close to retirement.
