The VC-121 lengthened the L-1049 fuselage by about 18 ft \/ 5.5 m, and was given more powerful engines and greater fuel capacity. The VC-121E served as the official aircraft of President Dwight Eisenhower from 1954 to 1961, and was also used by other top officials for high-priority flights. It was named “Columbine” after the state flower of Colorado.
