The point of the research was to study the effects of sustained high-altitude flights on aircraft. The YF-12 was constructed mainly of titanium alloy, and its flat black surfaces enabled it to withstand temperatures over 500°F \/ 260°C. It set speed and altitude records in 1965, and was the precursor of the SR-71 Blackbird.
